This week I shared a cup of tea and a good conversation with Jennifer O’Brien, an author, artist, and end-of-life preparation advocate and speaker. Jennifer has a unique perspective on caregiving and end of life, and I believe her work could be valuable for many of us.
After years of caring for people with serious illnesses as a physician, Jennifer’s husband, Bob Lehmberg, was diagnosed with stage IV metastatic cancer. This experience was challenging for Jennifer, as she had to care for the man who had dedicated his career to caregiving. During this time, Jennifer turned to art journaling as a source of comfort. Through collage, tableaus, notes, and observations, she documented the raw, honest, beautiful, and exhausting reality of caregiving. She also included wisdom and perspective from her husband’s years as a physician.
The result of Jennifer’s journey is a book that offers support and understanding to caregivers. When a friend who had been diagnosed with a rare, advanced bladder cancer read the book, he insisted that Jennifer give it to his wife to help her understand what lay ahead and feel supported as his caregiver. Seeing how much the book helped them during his final months, Jennifer realized that her creation could benefit others as well.
With over 35 years of experience as a practice management consultant and educator to physicians, as well as being an executive administrator for two large medical practices, Jennifer has a comprehensive understanding of healthcare. However, caregiving for her dying husband was both the greatest honor and challenge of her life.
Jennifer is dedicated to helping family caregivers feel supported while caring for others and taking care of themselves. She currently resides in Little Rock.
